An Unresponsive Furnace

Your furnace is one of the most important parts of your home and one of the most costly to repair. So what do you do when it appears to be broken?

If your furnace isn’t working, first try simply changing the filter. Often this is the issue. (This should be done at least once every few months– more often if you have allergies/asthma.)

You’ll also want to see if there is an indicator light on the furnace circuit board. If you see it and it is flashing, look for the chart that corresponds to it. This will tell you what is wrong.

Next, try cycling the power by turning the power off for five minutes and then turning it back on, either at the breaker or using the on-off switch on the furnace. This will reset the alarms in the system. You’ll turn the thermostat on and see if the system turns on. You’ll see the hot surface ignitor start to glow or hear the clicking of the spark ignitor. If the ignitor is not working, the gas valve will not stay open until your replace the ignitor.

Also, check that the gas did not accidentally get turned off.

Do not try to make any major repairs on your own, as this can void your warranty. Furthermore, it is always best to be on the safe side and call a professional if you are not comfortable with what you are doing.

You should already have a professional come twice a year to inspect and clean your HVAC system. Regular servicing will prevent the majority of problems from becoming huge!

Deep Clean Those Carpets

With the holidays approaching, everyone wants clean, beautiful carpets. However, more time inside during the fall and winter often means more accumulation of dirt in your carpets. So what are your options if you want your carpets clean? You can hire a professional, rent a heavy-duty carpet cleaner, or invest in a quality carpet cleaning system for a few hundred dollars, allowing you to clean as often as you like.download

If you decide to purchase your own system, look for one that has separate tanks for the cleaning solution and water. Since you have to refill the water more often, this will make refilling easier. Another feature to look for — especially if hauling it up and down stairs — is portability. It’s also a good idea to look for a cleaner that isn’t too big and heavy. Lastly, if you need to clean stairs, look for attachments that will make that easier.

Before setting out to deep clean your carpet, vacuum. You don’t want all the hair and dog fur clogging up your carpet cleaner. Next, spot treat any stains. There are many ways to go about this. One natural and commonly used method is using vinegar. Mix 2 tablespoons of borax with ½ cup of vinegar for most dark stains. For a spill that just happened, pour baking soda over the area, wait a few minutes, then wipe.

Next, carefully read the carpet cleaner’s instructions and within minutes you’ll be on your way to a cleaner carpet. When you’re finished, let the carpet dry thoroughly before using the room. If you want to speed up the process, a floor fan can help.

When you’re done, not only will your carpets look cleaner, but they will also make your home more hygienic overall and improve the quality of your air, making your home more comfortable for guests — especially allergy and asthma sufferers — this holiday season.
