Get Your Roof Winter Ready

file0001540045549

With a few days left of 50-degree temperatures, now is the time to check your roof’s condition before harsh winter weather hits. Grab a friend or family member and some sturdy shoes and head on up.

  • If you think you have a leak and the temperatures aren’t going to be low enough to freeze, take a hose up with you and spray to find the leak. This may be time-consuming, but don’t be discouraged, it will be worth it.
  • Clean the gutters again. Plenty of leaves have fallen, so even if you’ve done this once, you may want to check it again because you won’t want to be out there in the snow and freezing cold!
  • Check for dry rot. The plywood may deteriorate if a repair is in the middle of the roof, and the roof will sag and the shingles will crack and then leak. You can prevent this with a ridge vent and soffit vent.
  • Look for proper ventilation and consider rain and ice shields, as well as a drip edge to prevent ice buildup.
  • Do not overlook the rubber boots. You may need a new one because if they dry up they will cause major leaks. To install, you may need to remove some of the shingles and put a better layer of tar underneath.
  • Check the shingles and nails — and don’t forget about the valleys which are common places for leaks.
  • Remove any overhanging tree branches in order to dry out roof mold.

Saving Water in Your Toilet

toiletWant to save water?  About 45% of your total water usage is in the bathroom, and nearly 27% is in the toilet alone! Older toilets can use up to seven gallons per flush, while the most efficient ones use only 1.28 gallons per flush.  That is an annual difference for per person of a little more than 10,000 gallons per year.  That’s a lot of water that can be saved!

So what can you do to save water?  First, if you know you have older toilets that use a lot of water consider replacing them with new, lower flow units.  If you live in an area served by a municipal water supply and pay for water you can recoup your investment fairly quickly through the water and sewer charges.  If you depend on a well for water, you just may save yourself from a dry well during a drought.

If you don’t want to replace fixtures, consider ‘bricking’ your toilet.  You can use any item with sufficient weight to sink in and displace the water, but bricks are cheap and don’t corrode the toilet parts.  Place a brick in the back tank of your toilet.  This reduces the water that flows through the toilet with each flush.  And, as always fix any leaks, including flappers that don’t seal as soon as possible to reduce waste.  Also consider how you use your toilet.  Place used tissues in the wastebasket rather than flushing them.  This practice alone can save you a lot of money over time.

But remember, the new toilets are extremely cost effective and much more energy efficient.  We’re happy to review your plumbing issues and recommend the best course of action based on your budget.

Tree Roots and Sewer Lines

drain

Do your drains run slow?  You may think that it is a clog, but it could be an invasion of tree roots!  That’s right – the beautiful trees that line your street or your drive can be causing your drains to run slow.  Here’s how it works – tree roots can grow into your sewer lines through small cracks – especially in clay pipes that were popular fifty years ago.  The roots invade through the small cracks and as they grow they can make those small cracks into big cracks, eventually causing a complete blockage when they collapse!

So what can you do?  First, prevention is key – but you don’t have to cut down all your beautiful trees.  Instead, you can put a root killer down the toilet to work through the sewer lines and kill the invasive roots. You will want to be careful though as this is a strong chemical that can  be toxic.  You’ll also want to make sure in advance that you don’t have a pipe collapse or rupture.

Second, consider calling a professional to scope out your pipes.  Most plumbers have tiny cameras that they can send down your pipes to see any blockages and remove them.  These cameras will also give you a good idea of the overall condition of your pipes, which can help you diagnose and prevent future problems.  When in doubt about your pipes, always look to scope them before tackling any repairs.  This way you will know exactly what the problem is and where it is, so that you don’t dig up your entire back yard!

How To Clean Your Oven Glass

Do you ever clean the glass in your oven and then turn on the oven light and it still doesn’t look good? It could be that you are cleaning the exterior glass and overlooking all the grease on the inside of the door.oven_cleaner_2 (1)

The good news is that it is easy to make that glass sparkle!  To clean that glass, make a paste of baking soda and water.  Take a clean, damp cloth and rub the paste on the inside door of the oven, scrubbing the glass to remove the built up grease.  Let the solution sit for up to 15 minutes to loosen the grease.  Scrub with the baking soda paste a second time.  Wipe down with a damp cloth to remove the paste.  Repeat until all of the paste is removed, rinsing cloth frequently with clean water.  Finally, use a cloth soaked in vinegar to remove the final traces of backing soda and to polish the glass.  This will also serve to deodorize the oven.

If that doesn’t work, then try this method using a product from Norwex we’ve heard works really well. It’s an all natural, non-toxic cleaner for your oven or grill.

Heat your oven to 100-125 degrees and then turn off. Spray the cleaner on the inside of the door and let sit 10-15 minutes. Take a small scrubbing tool (like mesh) and scrub away the filth and grease. Wipe down with a wet cloth to get rid of the soap and grime, and then with a clean, dry cloth.

Won’t it be nice to see the inside of your oven again?

Super Bowl I by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

superbowl

The first world championship football game between the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL) was played on January 15, 1967. This game, which retroactively became known as Super Bowl I was between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers. Close to 62,000 people attended the game held at Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California.

The Green Bay Packers won the game with a score of 35 to the Kansas City Chiefs score of 10. The most valuable player was Bart Starr, the quarterback. The next year the Green Bay Packers defended their title by beating the Oakland Raiders in Miami. Bart Starr was selected as the MVP for that Super Bowl as well. Per NFL photos, tickets to Super Bowl I could be had for $10.

Clean Your Gutters by Central Carolina Air, Plumbing & Electric

guttersClean Your Gutters Before Old Man Winter Settles In

Next week will mark the official start to the winter season and the end of fall. Since all of the leaves have fallen off the trees, there is no time like the present to get your gutters in shape for winter. While it is important to clean gutters throughout the fall to ensure that water does not back up in them and damage your roof, it is even more important as we approach winter.

Freezing temperatures and water on a roof can combine to cause some real headaches for homeowners come spring. This is because when water backs up in your gutters and infiltrates the roof, it can cause damage, but when that same water freezes, it expands and can cause additional damage.

There are many solutions for cleaning gutters –blowing them out with a leaf blower, using a pressure washer to wash them out, installing guards that keep the debris out, or the old-fashioned method of getting on the roof or a ladder with a pair of gloves and cleaning them out by hand. No matter which method you choose, think safety first. If you don’t have the proper equipment or are unsteady on your feet, you might prefer to hire someone to help you with this chore. Look for landscaping companies or handymen to help you with this.

Don’t forget to nominate your hero for our “Heat for Heroes” campaign. We are giving away 100 ceramic heaters to heroes in our community in need throughout the month of December to honor those who have served our community.

Furnace Care by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

furnace inspectionTake Care of Your Furnace So That It Can Take Care of You!

The cold weather that marks the transition from fall to winter is descending upon us. There is no better time than right now to check on your furnace to make sure it is in tip-top shape for the coming cold weather. By checking it now you might save yourself the hassle of an emergency call later in the season. Regardless of whether you have an electric or gas furnace, you will want to check, and replace if necessary, air filters. This can boost your efficiency. Filters should be changed monthly, or as soon as they become blocked with dust and particles.

For gas furnaces, check the pilot light to ensure it is lit. Also check any fittings to make sure there are no leaks. While gas has an added odor to make it more detectable, you should always check by spraying a weak soap solution on fittings and looking for bubbles. Check the batteries in your carbon monoxide detector too.

If you have an electric furnace, check motors, pulleys and belts for signs of wear. Replace any parts now rather than waiting for them to wear out – and potentially leaving you and your family in the cold. Oil moving parts per manufacturer’s directions. If in doubt about how to service your furnace in preparation for winter, remember that you can call the professionals at Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric for all your HVAC needs.

Happy Hanukkah by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Happy Hanukkah!happy-hanukkah

Today marks the beginning of Hanukkah (also known as Chanukah), an eight day Jewish celebration which commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem. Sometimes called the Festival of Lights, it is celebrated by lighting the menorah, exchanging small gifts and eating traditional foods.

The events that inspired Hanukkah took place in about 200 BC when Antiochus IV Epiphanes took over control of Judah, present day Israel, and outlawed Judaism. By 168 BC, his soldiers had massacred thousands in Jerusalem and he set up an alter to the Greek god Zeus, and sacrificed pigs in the Second Temple. In response, Judah Maccabee led the Jewish revolt and within a few years had defeated Anticohus’ forces. He called on followers to cleanse the Temple, and relight the menorah. According to the Talmud, there was only enough olive oil to burn the menorah for one day, but through a miracle, the menorah burned for eight nights. This led to the modern day eight-night celebration.
