Getting the Most From Your Heating System

imagesThis is the time of year when most of us see skyrocketing energy bills and are reminded of our to-do list when it comes to checking and maintaining our heating systems. Here are some of the big items to put on your list:

  • Change the filter at least every three months. Change it every 1 to 2 months if you have pets or people in the house with health issues such as asthma. Filters prevent larger particles from entering the system, which would reduce airflow. In addition, a dirty filter exposed to condensation can become damp, meaning mold could be a concern. Make sure to buy the right filter for your particular system.
  • Check that your air ducts and pipes are properly sealed. Ducts are used to distribute conditioned air through the house. Typically about 20 to 30 percent of the air that moves through the system is lost through leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts, which means high energy bills!
  • Remove any dirt or corrosion, and keep the heat exchanger clean. Check manufacturer’s details for what you’ll need. This is best done by a professional if you aren’t sure of what you’re doing.
  • Lastly, an easy tip you or a family member can do is to keep air vents clear and keep furniture away from them.
  • Of course, regularly get your unit serviced by a company you can trust, like Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electrical! Start 2017 off right by calling us.

Utilizing a Sump Pump to Keep Your Basement Dry

pumpHave you ever heard of a sump pump?  Probably not if you don’t live in an area where flooding is common.  If you have heard of a sump pump chances are good that you now live, or have lived in an area with a pit in the basement.  These pits collect the extra water that seeps into the basement when we have excessive rain that is unable to run off to the streams, creeks and ponds.

In these cases, sump pumps sit just below the surface of the water collection pit.  When the water rises above a certain level, a water control switch is activated that turns the pump on.  Once this occurs, the pump will automatically turn on and pump the water out of the basement and outside and away from the house and it’s foundation.  This keeps the basement and foundation dry and free from mold.

Most sump pumps are directly wired into the house.  But if you have a finished basement, or expensive equipment, including appliances, in the basement,  consider installing a battery backup to protect your investment.  Test whether or not your sump pump works regularly by simply pouring a bucket of water into the pit to make sure that the sump pump turns on when  you pour the water into the pit.  If the pump comes on, it is working correctly.  If the pump doesn’t come on, you should check the electrical supply to make sure it is working.  Check breakers to make sure they aren’t tripped.  Sump pumps should always be on a dedicate breaker.

Stress Free Super Bowl Party by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electric

Hosting a Stress Free Super Bowl Partysb party

With the Super Bowl this weekend, many of us are gearing up to have a couple of friends over to watch the big game. So how can you be a great host, without stressing out? Here are a couple of tips to help you do just that:

  • Ask everyone to bring an appetizer to share – it is best to let your guests know in advance about how many people will attend so that they can plan accordingly as well as any food allergies.
  • Set up a self-serve drink station – grab a cooler or large tub and ice down beer, bottled water and sodas so that guests can serve themselves.
  • Limit alcoholic drink choices – this will not only simplify the time required to make drinks, but ensures that you don’t have to have a ton of mixers and garnishes. Choose one mixed drink that can be made either alcoholic or virgin. Provide ingredients and a recipe and allow guests to make their own.
  • Set up a self-serve food station – allow guests to serve themselves using disposable cutlery, plates and cups.
  • Place trashcans throughout the area guests will occupy – that way they can help with clean up.
  • When guests arrive write their name on their dish – use masking tape to writ their name on it in case it gets left behind.
  • If children will attend consider hiring a babysitter to help entertain them.

Finally, enjoy yourself. The Super Bowl is not meant to be a fussy event. Everyone just wants to enjoy watching the game and cheering on their favorite team.

Happy MLK Day by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Celebrating Martin Luther King Daymlk

Martin Luther King day is an American federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of January each year. This holiday is in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday which is on January 15. King was known as the leader of the nonviolent civil rights movement that protested discrimination. The holiday was first observed in 1986.

The national Martin Luther King Day of Service was a result of legislation signed into law in 1994 that encourages everyone to honor King by providing citizen action volunteer service to their communities. Many universities participate in this program and offer special programs in honor of Dr. King.

Did you know? The Japanese city of Hiroshima and the Canadian city of Toronto both celebrate Martin Luther King Day as well, although not as a federal holiday as in the United States.

Cleaning Your Chimney by Central Carolina Air, Plumbing & Electric

Cleaning your Fireplacechimeny 1

Given that the weather has turned cool, you have probably had the chance to enjoy a crackling fire in the last few weeks. There is nothing quite like cozying up on the couch with someone you love while watching the flames lick at the logs. However, many of us neglect our fireplaces.

Did you know that those fires cause soot that can build up in your chimney into a thick, tarry substance called creosote? This creosote can potentially cause a fire in your chimney. That would certainly put a damper on your relaxing evening by the fire. To clean your chimney, follow these tips:

  • Remove grates and andirons from the fireplace and set outside to clean later.
  • Move a trashcan next to the fireplace.
  • Check ashes to ensure that all embers are completely burned out before shoveling out the ashes.
  • Place a disposable tarp in the fireplace and over the hearth and any flooring to protect it from soot. Cover with newspapers to absorb any liquids and reduce the amount of soot that will get on the tarp.
  • Next, open the flue. Most are on a lever near the fireplace. Using a flashlight look up your chimney while engaging the lever. If you see the small door move, you have found the flue. Leave it open as you finish cleaning the chimney.
  • Using a chimney sweep (nylon or metal wire brush 1 inch larger in circumference than your chimney), scrub the walls to loosen debris. Debris should fall onto your tarp and newspaper for easy disposal.
  • Once you finish sweeping, make a solution of 6 tablespoons of trisodium phosphate, 1 cup of bleach and 1 gallon of warm water into a plastic bucket. Use gloves as this solution is very strong and should be handled with care according to the directions on the package. Use this solution and your brush to scrub the walls of the chimney.
  • Rinse with warm water.
  • Dispose of the newspapers and tarp carefully by folding all edges inward to form a bundle and contain the mess.
  • Finally, using a nylon brush, clean loose debris from grates and andirons before returning them to the fireplace.

While you can clean your own chimney, you may prefer to call a professional if you are especially sensitive to chemicals, lack the time and patience, or simply don’t want to tackle this job on your own. Look online for chimney sweeps to find a local professional.

Clean Your Gutters by Central Carolina Air, Plumbing & Electric

guttersClean Your Gutters Before Old Man Winter Settles In

Next week will mark the official start to the winter season and the end of fall. Since all of the leaves have fallen off the trees, there is no time like the present to get your gutters in shape for winter. While it is important to clean gutters throughout the fall to ensure that water does not back up in them and damage your roof, it is even more important as we approach winter.

Freezing temperatures and water on a roof can combine to cause some real headaches for homeowners come spring. This is because when water backs up in your gutters and infiltrates the roof, it can cause damage, but when that same water freezes, it expands and can cause additional damage.

There are many solutions for cleaning gutters –blowing them out with a leaf blower, using a pressure washer to wash them out, installing guards that keep the debris out, or the old-fashioned method of getting on the roof or a ladder with a pair of gloves and cleaning them out by hand. No matter which method you choose, think safety first. If you don’t have the proper equipment or are unsteady on your feet, you might prefer to hire someone to help you with this chore. Look for landscaping companies or handymen to help you with this.

Don’t forget to nominate your hero for our “Heat for Heroes” campaign. We are giving away 100 ceramic heaters to heroes in our community in need throughout the month of December to honor those who have served our community.

Furnace Care by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

furnace inspectionTake Care of Your Furnace So That It Can Take Care of You!

The cold weather that marks the transition from fall to winter is descending upon us. There is no better time than right now to check on your furnace to make sure it is in tip-top shape for the coming cold weather. By checking it now you might save yourself the hassle of an emergency call later in the season. Regardless of whether you have an electric or gas furnace, you will want to check, and replace if necessary, air filters. This can boost your efficiency. Filters should be changed monthly, or as soon as they become blocked with dust and particles.

For gas furnaces, check the pilot light to ensure it is lit. Also check any fittings to make sure there are no leaks. While gas has an added odor to make it more detectable, you should always check by spraying a weak soap solution on fittings and looking for bubbles. Check the batteries in your carbon monoxide detector too.

If you have an electric furnace, check motors, pulleys and belts for signs of wear. Replace any parts now rather than waiting for them to wear out – and potentially leaving you and your family in the cold. Oil moving parts per manufacturer’s directions. If in doubt about how to service your furnace in preparation for winter, remember that you can call the professionals at Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric for all your HVAC needs.

Pet Safety by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

The holiday season is a time to celebrate with those we love – including our furry family members. While you are decorating this holiday season keep these tips in mind to keep Fido and Felix safe:

  • Some plants may be poisonous for pets. Either forgo them altogether or place them out of reach of pets. Poinsettia, holly, pine needles, mistletoe and lilies are just a few examples. For a complete list go to aspca.org and search for toxic plants.
  • Keep tinsel and ribbons up high so that pets can’t reach them. If eaten, they can get stuck in their intestines and cause blockages.
  • Don’t burn candles unattended or low to the ground since tails can sometime go astray and knock over the candle, or worse, catch the tail on fire.
  • Keep glass ornaments high on the tree, and in case of breakage, clean up the glass shards immediately to keep paws and tummies safe from broken glass.
  • Secure the Christmas tree to a wall or the ceiling in order to prevent it from tipping over on pets.
  • Do not let pets drink water from the base of the Christmas tree. It can contain preservatives which are poisonous, or harbor bacteria.

We want you and your pets to enjoy this holiday season. We hope these tips will help keep all of you safe. I want to encourage you to take a moment to nominate your favorite hero for our “Heat for Heroes” contest that started on December 1! We are giving a ceramic heater to 100 heroes in our community.
