Tree Roots and Sewer Lines

drain

Do your drains run slow?  You may think that it is a clog, but it could be an invasion of tree roots!  That’s right – the beautiful trees that line your street or your drive can be causing your drains to run slow.  Here’s how it works – tree roots can grow into your sewer lines through small cracks – especially in clay pipes that were popular fifty years ago.  The roots invade through the small cracks and as they grow they can make those small cracks into big cracks, eventually causing a complete blockage when they collapse!

So what can you do?  First, prevention is key – but you don’t have to cut down all your beautiful trees.  Instead, you can put a root killer down the toilet to work through the sewer lines and kill the invasive roots. You will want to be careful though as this is a strong chemical that can  be toxic.  You’ll also want to make sure in advance that you don’t have a pipe collapse or rupture.

Second, consider calling a professional to scope out your pipes.  Most plumbers have tiny cameras that they can send down your pipes to see any blockages and remove them.  These cameras will also give you a good idea of the overall condition of your pipes, which can help you diagnose and prevent future problems.  When in doubt about your pipes, always look to scope them before tackling any repairs.  This way you will know exactly what the problem is and where it is, so that you don’t dig up your entire back yard!

Do Rugs Matter? by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Electric & Plumbing

Do Rugs Really Matter?rug making

A nice, well placed rug can really bring the room together. It can pick up accent colors in your color palette and pull seemingly different pieces of furniture together into one cohesive look. But, other than looking nice and adding to the look of a room, what do rugs actually do? Here are a few advantages to using rugs in your room:

  • Rugs can add warmth to a room. This is especially important for rooms that are built on a concrete slab. Rugs will actually provide a bit of insulation in the room by trapping air between the fibers. If you have a really cold floor and want to warm it up, look for a rug with a long pile like a shag rug or one with dense wool cut or loop pile.
  • Rugs can provide cushioning for hard floors. Do you have to stand in your kitchen for hours when cooking or doing dishes? A rug and a rug pad can add that extra bit of softness that will help your feet and back feel less achy at the end of cooking your holiday meal. Consider a rubberized, thick pad to provide the most cushioning.
  • Rugs absorb noise. Have you ever walked in an empty house or building that had no furniture, no drapes and no carpeting? Sounds seem to amplify and reverberate off of everything. By incorporating textile products into your home, you can soften the surfaces that sound waves bounce off of and make it just a bit quieter. This is one reason you want to include a rug in a baby’s room if possible.

Picking Paint by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

How to Pick Paint Colors for your Homeyellow paint

Often when we first purchase our home, we want to go in an repaint everything before we get all moved in and settled in. After all, who wants to move all the furniture again, tape off the trim and cover the floors? Why not do it all at once? While that is a great thing to do, unless you are going to pick one neutral color and paint it throughout the house, you will probably need to live through a couple of seasons to see the way the light plays on the walls, and interacts with your furniture and art before you can pick that color that makes your heart sing.

So, now that you’ve seen how the light interacts with the furniture and art, how do you decide? First, use popular social media sites like Pinterest or Houzz to find pictures of spaces and colors you like. Mark each one clearly so you can go back to it for reference. Narrow down your selections to less than seven colors. Head to your local paint shop and ask for paint chips. Bring them home and using painters tape, put them up on the walls. You may ask for more than one chip so you can look at the color on multiple walls. From there, narrow it down to just three to four colors. Purchase small cans of these paints and paint 24”x24” swatches on the wall so that you can ‘live’ with the color for at least a month to decide if you like it.

Once you have selected your color, don’t forget to select a trim color that accents the color and really makes it pop. Remember to take this opportunity to clean or replace switchplate covers, if needed. This added attention to detail will make your room really come to life!

Spring Cleaning by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

While the Weather is Cold, Get a Jump on Spring Cleaning

Spring seems like a long way off, but now is a great time to get a jump start on some of your spring cleaning by cleaning your light fixtures and lamp shades. We often forget to clean our light fixtures until we are sitting at the table eating Easter dinner and look up and see cobwebs and dust all over the dining room chandelier.   Yikes! I hope no one looks up! And from that point on, it is the only thing you can look at!  Save yourself the trouble by taking some time now to clean it up.

Light fixtures should be turned off before removing covers. When in doubt, cut the power at the breaker. Remove the globe, cover or shade. Fabric shades can be gently brushed or vacuumed to remove dust and dirt. Glass and plastic components can be cleaned with a mild soap solution like dish detergent. Dry thoroughly before replacing. Metal fixtures can be cleaned with cleaning compounds made specifically for that metal. Be sure to test a small spot in an inconspicuous location before using any cleaner on the whole fixture. When dry, replace the cover. The brighter room will lift your spirit during the dreary days of winter.

Water Heater Set Too High? by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Is Your Water Heater Thermostat Set Too High?water heater

On a frosty winter morning it feels so good to turn on that shower head and let it get nice and steamy before stepping in for the morning shower. But as comforting as a nice blistering shower sounds, we all know it can be painful if you aren’t careful. And it can hurt you in ways you don’t expect like in your wallet.

The thermostat on your hot water heater should be set at about 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Many manufacturers will set them at 140 degrees, but the risk at that temperature is scalding, particularly for children who may not realize the water is too hot until they are immersed. Some wonder about their dishwasher needing a higher temperature, but most dishwashers have booster heaters for this reason. Lowering it to 120 can save an estimated $10-30 annually for each 10 degree decrease in temperature.

The only risk by lowering the temperature is that bacteria can build up at the lower temperature, but most people in general good health do not have to worry. If you have a suppressed immune system or chronic respiratory problems consider keeping it at 140 but add mixing valves at each sink or shower to prevent scalding.

Happy MLK Day by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Celebrating Martin Luther King Daymlk

Martin Luther King day is an American federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of January each year. This holiday is in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday which is on January 15. King was known as the leader of the nonviolent civil rights movement that protested discrimination. The holiday was first observed in 1986.

The national Martin Luther King Day of Service was a result of legislation signed into law in 1994 that encourages everyone to honor King by providing citizen action volunteer service to their communities. Many universities participate in this program and offer special programs in honor of Dr. King.

Did you know? The Japanese city of Hiroshima and the Canadian city of Toronto both celebrate Martin Luther King Day as well, although not as a federal holiday as in the United States.

Cleaning Your Chimney by Central Carolina Air, Plumbing & Electric

Cleaning your Fireplacechimeny 1

Given that the weather has turned cool, you have probably had the chance to enjoy a crackling fire in the last few weeks. There is nothing quite like cozying up on the couch with someone you love while watching the flames lick at the logs. However, many of us neglect our fireplaces.

Did you know that those fires cause soot that can build up in your chimney into a thick, tarry substance called creosote? This creosote can potentially cause a fire in your chimney. That would certainly put a damper on your relaxing evening by the fire. To clean your chimney, follow these tips:

  • Remove grates and andirons from the fireplace and set outside to clean later.
  • Move a trashcan next to the fireplace.
  • Check ashes to ensure that all embers are completely burned out before shoveling out the ashes.
  • Place a disposable tarp in the fireplace and over the hearth and any flooring to protect it from soot. Cover with newspapers to absorb any liquids and reduce the amount of soot that will get on the tarp.
  • Next, open the flue. Most are on a lever near the fireplace. Using a flashlight look up your chimney while engaging the lever. If you see the small door move, you have found the flue. Leave it open as you finish cleaning the chimney.
  • Using a chimney sweep (nylon or metal wire brush 1 inch larger in circumference than your chimney), scrub the walls to loosen debris. Debris should fall onto your tarp and newspaper for easy disposal.
  • Once you finish sweeping, make a solution of 6 tablespoons of trisodium phosphate, 1 cup of bleach and 1 gallon of warm water into a plastic bucket. Use gloves as this solution is very strong and should be handled with care according to the directions on the package. Use this solution and your brush to scrub the walls of the chimney.
  • Rinse with warm water.
  • Dispose of the newspapers and tarp carefully by folding all edges inward to form a bundle and contain the mess.
  • Finally, using a nylon brush, clean loose debris from grates and andirons before returning them to the fireplace.

While you can clean your own chimney, you may prefer to call a professional if you are especially sensitive to chemicals, lack the time and patience, or simply don’t want to tackle this job on your own. Look online for chimney sweeps to find a local professional.

Keeping Your Home Cooler in Summer by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electrical

Tips on Keeping Your Home Cooler During the Summer by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electrical

Summer can wreak havoc on electric bills as AC units have to work harder and run longer to keep your home and even temperature. There are many things you can do to help keep your system working well and keep your home cooler.

Here are a few tips for you to stay cooler and safe money on your bill:

  • Having a professional check and maintain your AC unit annually can drastically improve the performance of your AC unit by cleaning out debris, checking for leaks and improving air quality!
  • Keep your blinds closed during the day to keep out extra heat from the sun
  • Purchase a programmable thermostat that allows the temperature to adjust upwards during the day by a few degrees and then down shortly before you come home from work
  • Consider light reducing window covering treatments on areas of the home that get the most direct sun. Medium covered draperies with white backing can reduce as much as 33% of heat gain.
