Using Space Heaters

c700x420

If you’re trying to warm up a certain room, a space heater can be a great way to do that. However, the space heater’s effectiveness is dependent on you taking specific precautions while purchasing wisely so you don’t waste electricity (and money).

There are a few different types of heaters that can be used in your home. Electric space heaters are the only unvented space heaters safe for indoor use. They do not pose indoor air quality concerns, but can still be a fire hazard if not used safely. These should be plugged directly into a wall. If an extension cord is absolutely necessary, use a short heavy-duty cord of 14-gauge wire or heavier. Look for a tip-over safety switch that shuts the unit off if it is turned over.

Vented combustion heaters, on the other hand, are made to be put next to an outside wall so the flue gas vent can be installed through a ceiling or wall (unvented combustion units are not recommended for indoor use). Only use the approved fuel and do not overfill the heater or fill when it is still hot. It is a good idea to have a vented space heater inspected by a professional each year to prevent issues that can cause high levels of carbon monoxide to enter your home.

In addition, below are a few more things to consider when buying or using a space heater.

  • Look for newer models that have the up-to-date safety features. They should have the Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) label.
  • Only buy what you need. You don’t need a huge heater for a small room. Look for a sizing chart on the box.
  • Heaters should be put on level surfaces where they won’t be in anyone’s way. Always keep pets and children far away.
  • Kerosene heaters are not recommended in your home, and in some communities, may even be illegal to use.
  • Remember to install or check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms!

Keeping Your Oven & Stove Clean and Safe

You can almost smell the turkey and stuffing now. Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Before you have everyone cooking up a feast in your kitchen though, think about when you last cleaned your stove and oven and checked things out. This can increase the longevity of your appliances in the long run. If things are looking pretty dirty, you may even want to do these things before the big day.

First, avoid using abrasive materials that could scratch surfaces and oven cleaners with harsh chemicals—especially if you have kids and pets. Instead, loosen the stove gunk with baking soda and water. As for the knobs, you can wash them with water and soap, but don’t use water around the area where they’re attached to the stove. (Water + electrical stuff = bad)

With regard to the oven, unplug before cleaning. You may want to avoid the auto-clean setting if your oven is pretty gross, as this can end up setting off the smoke alarms and making things worse. Remove the racks and coat your oven (not the heating elements) in a paste made of ½ cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water. Let it sit for 10+ hours then wipe it out. You can also spray some vinegar on top of the baking soda at this point, to aid in the de-greasing.

What about the oven racks? Put them in a bathtub and cover them with hot water. Add dishwasher detergent and leave them soaking for 4+ hours. Then use a scrub brush on them.

Take a moment to look at the coil burners and replace any that are damaged in any way or have a spot that is redder, which means it will soon burn out.

If you recently bought a new gas oven, it’s a good idea to get someone to replace the gas line. Changing out the oven can cause leaks in the gas line after all of the movement.

Insulate Pipes to Save Money

pipe water

With winter over, the thought of insulating pipes is probably not high on your list.  Instead your attention is likely turning to how to optimize your air conditioner. But now is a great time to consider insulating pipes too!

To start, check all of your pipes for visible leaks.  In all likelihood, your pipes are already insulated with some type of insulation.  Most pipes are wrapped in a foam material that looks much like a pool noodle.  The foam material is usually slit on one side so that you can slide it off easily to look at the pipes.  If you see any visible leaks have them repaired before the leaks cause damage.

Next, look at your insulation to determine whether or not you need to replace it. If it crumbles as it comes off it is a good time to consider replacing it.  If any insulation is missing, you will want to replace that as well.  Replacement insulation can be purchased very inexpensively at most hardware stores.  Simply fit the slit tube over the pipe.  Use tape to hold the insulation in place.  The materials sold today will provide you with much better insulation than those of 20 years ago.  If you suspect asbestos insulation call a professional to check it out before you attempt to remove it or do any work.

While this is not typically the time of year that you consider replacing insulation, the investment of your time now will save you money later.  In addition, it is warmer and moving around under your home will be much easier now than in the heat of summer or the bitter cold of winter.

Installing a Peephole by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Installing a Peephole in your Door

We all know that a peephole can provide a lot of security. We teach our kids to never open the door until they know who is on the other side. But, if your front door does not have glass in it or side windows what do you do? Installing a peephole can solve this problem, and is relatively easy for most homeowners.

First, head to your local hardware store and purchase a peephole kit, along with a holesaw sized to accommodate the peephole. These circular saw bits will fit on your standard home drill. Just be sure to purchase the bit that is made to cut through the material your door is made of (metal, wood, etc.).

Follow instructions that come with the kit to install the peephole. A couple of tips to remember are to apply masking tape to the door before drilling with new blades to ensure you get a clean cut. Sandpaper can finish out the rough edges. If children or adults in wheelchairs regularly answer the door, consider installing a peephole at a height that better suits their needs.

Stress Free Super Bowl Party by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electric

Hosting a Stress Free Super Bowl Partysb party

With the Super Bowl this weekend, many of us are gearing up to have a couple of friends over to watch the big game. So how can you be a great host, without stressing out? Here are a couple of tips to help you do just that:

  • Ask everyone to bring an appetizer to share – it is best to let your guests know in advance about how many people will attend so that they can plan accordingly as well as any food allergies.
  • Set up a self-serve drink station – grab a cooler or large tub and ice down beer, bottled water and sodas so that guests can serve themselves.
  • Limit alcoholic drink choices – this will not only simplify the time required to make drinks, but ensures that you don’t have to have a ton of mixers and garnishes. Choose one mixed drink that can be made either alcoholic or virgin. Provide ingredients and a recipe and allow guests to make their own.
  • Set up a self-serve food station – allow guests to serve themselves using disposable cutlery, plates and cups.
  • Place trashcans throughout the area guests will occupy – that way they can help with clean up.
  • When guests arrive write their name on their dish – use masking tape to writ their name on it in case it gets left behind.
  • If children will attend consider hiring a babysitter to help entertain them.

Finally, enjoy yourself. The Super Bowl is not meant to be a fussy event. Everyone just wants to enjoy watching the game and cheering on their favorite team.

Happy Birthday Elvis by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

Happy Birthday to the King of Rock N Rollelvis

It has been nearly 40 years since Elvis Presley died and still over six hundred thousand visitors travel every year to Graceland, his Memphis home. It’s hard to believe, but had he lived Elvis would be 81 years old tomorrow. Born January 8, 1935 to a poor family in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis initially worked as a truck driver before hitting it big with “That’s All Right Mama”.

Elvis had a string of hits from the 1950s through the 1970s. He is best remembered for bringing forward rockabillly music that incorporated elements of country, bluegrass and gospel music. In addition, his showmanship on the stage set the crowds afire. Elvis went on to work on the big screen as an actor in the movie “Love Me Tender”. In 1958 he was inducted into the Army and served for two years. When he was released from service his popularity was nearly as high as when he left to serve. Few artists can claim that distinction.

Caring for You by Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric

frayed ropeTaking Care of Yourself during the Holiday Rush

With all of the gifts to purchase and wrap, décor to set up, parties, celebrations , and time with close family and friends, it can be easy to find yourself frazzled and weary at the end of the day during the holiday season. Take a moment to do something nice for yourself. You may find that as your energy begins to fade doing a little something for yourself will give you enough energy to get those last few items crossed off your to-do list.

While a day at the spa may be exactly what the doctor ordered, you can find a little peace in some very simple things. Here are a few suggestions for how you can sneak in just a little ‘me’ time during the busy holiday season:

  • Take a leisurely bath with a beverage of your choice. Make it extra indulgent by lighting candles, playing soft music and including your favorite bubble bath or bath salts.
  • Download a meditation app on your smartphone and listen to it at night before bed. Meditation apps are available to help you sleep, reduce your worries, even help with time management. Many are even free!
  • Consider hiring someone to help with the cooking or cleaning. Think outside the box for this one. You don’t have to hire a professional cleaner or chef, consider paying neighborhood teens to help you clean out the garage, dust, vacuum, bake or set up décor. You will be providing them with an opportunity to earn money while learning important life skills. It will also help you check items off your to-do list.
  • Consider purchasing ready-to-bake meals to ease the burden of preparing dinner each night. These meals are available from many restaurants if you call in advance.
  • Partner with a friend to give each other a break. If you hate to wrap presents but love to bake, find a friend that loves to wrap presents and let them wrap yours while you bake cookies and cakes for you both.
  • Let it go! The holiday season is really about the joy that comes from our faith, family and friends. If it isn’t important, just let it go. No one will remember the cranberries on the kitchen ceiling from the blender accident. They will remember the warmth and kindness that you showed them during their first Christmas in a new town.

Don’t forget to nominate your hero for our “Heat for Heroes” campaign. We are giving away 100 ceramic heaters to heroes in our community in need throughout the month of December to honor those who have served our community.
