How to Increase Productivity

The sun is staying up longer, and weather is getting warmer, often encouraging people to become more productive and active. After the winter months that we spend cozying up, watching movies and drinking hot cocoa, it may be difficult to snap into a productive mindset. So how do you increase productivity this Spring, especially with those home tasks that have been lingering?

  • Get rid of distractions so that you can focus simply on the task at hand. Turn off the TV, power off the radio, or go into a room where there isn’t talking or movement. You know best what causes distractions to you, so tune those out or eliminate them all together.
  • Keep a list. How often have you thought of the things you need to do, yet failed to do some of them simply because you didn’t remember? If it’s not written down, chances are high that you’ll forget. Whether it’s a grocery list, cleaning list or work list, write down all that you need to get done for that day.
  • Accomplish the most important items on your list at the very beginning of the day. We have the most energy at the beginning of the day, so expend this energy wisely. It’s also easy to let things that are toward the bottom of our list slide until the next day(s).
  • Know when to take a break. Do you ever get to the point when you’ve tried to force creativity or spend tedious hours getting something assembled? Sometimes the best solution to finding the genius answer or finishing the project is to simply walk away from it and give yourself a break.
  • Periodically review your goals – What are you working towards? How do all your tasks align with and move you forward toward your end goals? Just a little reminder – make sure they are realistic and achievable so you can actually reach them J
  • Eat for energy. High fiber and high protein foods will fuel your body and stimulate your mind with a boost of energy.
  • Stay organized – when everything has a place, it helps you save time instead of always looking for misplaced items. You can use your extra time on more important tasks.

In addition to keeping your home organized, it’s also important to keep your home running efficiently. At Central Carolina Air Conditioning, we can perform thorough preventative maintenance on your systems so that you don’t get to the point of having to replace your systems or lose money due to an inefficient system.

Home Maintenance Checklist for every Homeowner

Are you currently a homeowner, or about to become a homeowner? While it’s a rewarding feeling to own your own home, there are many responsibilities that come along with that accomplishment. There will be plenty of situations that will require the attention of a professional to fix. But what home maintenance tasks should you be able to fix on your own? Here are a few:

  • Cut the water supply. This may be one of the first things you learn about your home. Locate the main water valve in your home. The shut-off valve can often be found in the crawl space or basement. When a pipe unexpectedly bursts, you’ll want to go to the shut-off valve and immediately turn it off.

  • Unclog drains. Larger tasks will require calling a plumber to fix, however, you can quickly and easily unclog a sink or shower drain. Use a chemical drain cleaner such as Drano, and this will might remedy your clogged drain. There are also alternatives to a chemical cleaner. A drain snake can reach down the pipe and pull out whatever may be clogging it.

  • Reset a circuit breaker – which is most likely found in your electrical panel. If the circuit becomes overused, then the breaker trips. To turn the circuit breaker back on, you’ll have to reset it.  Locate the one breaker that is “off”, opposite from the rest of the breakers that are “on.”

  • Caulk – throughout the many years of home ownership, you will inevitably have to caulk some part of your bathtub tile or walls. Pay careful attention when completing this task so that you are allocating the proper amount of caulk while squeezing. It’s recommended that you cut the tube at the top at about ¼ inch down so that you will be able to use the perfect amount while squeezing the tube along the portion of the tile or wall that needs to be caulked.

Enjoy the satisfying feeling of maintaining your home by mastering these few home maintenance tasks. For the bigger and more dangerous requests such as faulty shut-off valves, water heater flushes, dye tests, load balancing of your breaker panel and installation services, leave it to the professionals! Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electrical will help with these more serious maintenance requests.

Quick Ways to Freshen Up Your Home For Fall

Maybe you’re getting ready to have guests over and you’d like to spruce things up, or you’re just in the mood to make changes without shelling out a ton of money or spending all weekend on projects. If you’ve already tidied up a bit and want to do a little something more, here are some easy ways to freshen up your home.

With fall and winter coming up, you’ll need more light. Head to the store and switch out your 60-watt bulbs with 3-way bulbs so that you can soften light in a room. While you’re at it, look for energy-efficient bulbs, which will cost more but last longer and use less electricity.

Update your accessories. No, not your scarves and hats—we’re talking couch pillows and mantelpiece décor. Take a look at what you already have in your closet and then take a quick run to the store—even the dollar store has great stuff. Add some festive fall pillows and a comfy throw on your couch and get some pinecones, pumpkins, or whatever your heart desires for your mantle. This can change for each holiday or season—so have fun with it.

Frame and display your kids’ drawings. If you have kids, this is probably something you’ve thought about but never got around to doing. Spruce up a bare wall with your kids’ fantastic art. It’s sweet and will bring a smile to guests’ faces.

Clean your carpets—especially if people are staying the night in those carpeted bedrooms. If you have a carpet cleaner, this will be easy and shouldn’t take more than a few hours. If you have to rent one, it will take up a little more time and you’ll have to shell out on average about $30-$40. Don’t worry about moving large pieces of furniture such as dressers—just shampoo the areas that can be seen and that you walk on. They’ll look like new!

Pressure Washing Around Your Home

Perhaps your deck is looking pretty dirty or you’re getting ready paint your siding. It’s a great time of year to start pressure washing around your home. Here’s how to get started.Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Heating, Electrical, and Plumbing pressure washing tips.

Spraying power ranges from 1,200 to 3,000 pounds per square inch (psi).  To keep from damaging your painted soft-grain wood siding, or other soft materials, use a 1,200 to 1,500 psi model. It is also a good idea to look for a wide spray nozzle to disperse water pressure more evenly. The stronger non-painted surfaces can withstand 2,500 to 3,000 psi models, which will work the fastest.

Before getting started with the pressure washing, cover lights, shrubs, plants, or anything else that you want to protect with plastic or drop cloths and make sure they are secure with duct tape or weights. Also, take a brush and scrub visible mildew that you can easily reach.

Next, connect a garden hose to the pressure washer and turn on the water. Do not skip out on testing the pressure! Hold the pressure washer nozzle with both hands about 3 feet from the wall, then move closer to the wall until you are sure you won’t cause any damage but feel the spray is strong enough to remove dirt as needed.

Begin by spraying towards the top of the house and then work your way down. Don’t forget the overhangs and gutters (spray these at about a 45-degree angle.)

Leave the siding to dry for at least a few days before you begin painting. If you’d like, you can use the same pressure washer for your driveway, porch, sidewalk and deck. Keep in mind though, that these areas typically need a stronger psi, so you may not be able to get quite as much dirt and grime off as you would with another model.

Get a Mosquito-Proof Backyard For The Summer

Mosquito-Proof Backyard from Central Carolina Air Conditioning, Heating , Plumbing, and Electrical in North Carolina

You’ve likely already seen a mosquito or two this season—and it’s only the beginning. Not only are bites annoying and unsightly, but they can transfer disease. How can you get a mosquito-proof backyard for the summer?

First off, get rid of standing water (a.k.a. mosquito breeding sites)! You’d be surprised where water can accumulate. Clean out your gutters, turn over buckets and baby pools, and store old tires, tools, unused flower pots and wheelbarrows. Remove water from in-ground pool drains if possible. If it isn’t possible, treat those areas.

Adult mosquitoes hang out in overgrowth and brush—so clean up your land. Take some time to pull the weeds, trim the hedges, pick up branches, mow the grass, etc. You can then spray an insecticide or natural repellent. Homemade sprays can use water and garlic or onion, citronella oil, or lavender oil.

If you’re a gardener, you can also plant some mosquito-repelling plants, such as citronella, feverfew, catnip and lavender.

If you’re having people over this summer, add some stalks of rosemary to the hot coals on your grill to repel mosquitoes.

Lastly, spray yourself! If you don’t want to use a DEET product, try one of these two homemade sprays:

-4 teaspoons of distilled or boiled water, 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil, 3 drops of lavender oil (this has to be stored in the fridge)

-1 cup of water, 5 drops of lavender oil, 3 drops of geranium oil, 10 drops of citronella oil
